The ranking issued by the Times Higher Education International for the year 2016 showed that 11 Turkish universities, topped by Koç University, were among the best 800 universities in the world, with the university ranked 251.

The University Assessment issued by The Times is based on several criteria, including the level of teaching and research, the international outlook, and the number of citations. In this regard, Koç University got a relatively high score in terms of the number of citations, reaching 74.9%.

This year’s ranking included 800 universities from 70 countries instead of 400 universities from 41 countries in last year’s ranking. This year witnessed the continued dominance of American universities in the top ten with six universities. Then Britain with three universities, Switzerland has one university.

Caltech ranked first in the world for the second year in a row thanks to the College of Science, The British University of Oxford advanced one place to become second, ahead of Stanford University, which came in third. Then the University of Cambridge, which came fourth, ahead of the Massachusetts Institute, which came fifth, and Harvard University dropped two places to become the sixth.

As for Turkish universities, Koç University ranked first among the top 300 universities. It was followed by the universities of Bilkent and Sabanci among the top 400 universities, Boğaziçi University is among the top 500 universities, Istanbul University of Technology and Middle East University of Technology are among the top 600 universities. While five universities were among the top 700 universities: Anadolu University, Erciyes University, Heiji Tepe, Istanbul, and the Yildiz University of Technology.
