Marmara University was founded on January 16, 1883 under the name “Al Hamidi High Trade Office”. It was affiliated to the Ottoman Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Minerals. The ministry aimed at graduating qualified people to work in the fields of mining, trade, agriculture and industry, and Marmara University was able to graduate its first batch in 1887, and this batch consisted of 13 people, After several successes achieved by the university, on the date of September 21, 1889 AD, it was linked to the Ministry of Education {Education} to be announced after that as an official educational university under the name of the Commercial and Economic Educational Academy.

In 1982, with the amendment changes, it was called Marmara University. Since that date to this day, Marmara University is still practicing its educational activity. To this day, it has managed to graduate more than 10 million graduates, some of whom were among the most important figures in the history of Turkish politics, such as; Abdullah Gul (President of Turkey from 2007-2014), Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003-2014 and its current president).
